In 1893 a group of South Australian professional and businessmen founded The Stanley Wine Company at Clare to produce high quality red and white wines. The name Stanley was chosen to identify the company with the local electoral district of Stanley and represents a 140-year history of successful wine-grape growing.
In 1984 the production of Stanley wine casks was transferred from the Leasingham Clare Valley winery to Buronga, being closer to the supply of fruit for cask wines. Today the name Leasingham is reserved for premium Clare Valley wines while the Stanley Wine Company lies at the cutting edge of modern bulk winemaking technology.
Historically the Buronga (originally Morquong) site was established in 1969 by Hungerford Hill Pty Limited, seven kilometres from Mildura on the Silver City Highway. It officially began operating on March the 7th of that year.
Following the 1983 vintage, the Buronga site was purchased by GN Raymond Pty Limited, who after a brief eight-month period of tenure on-sold it to the multi-national conglomerate HJ Heinz Limited.
Under the HJ Heinz ownership the Buronga site was practically demolished and replaced by a purpose built modern winemaking facility. The Heinz philosophy was to be the lowest cost producer in whatever market they ventured into, and no cost was spared in achieving this goal. When the dust had settled the Buronga plant had changed from a 12,000 tonne juice processing operation, to a 35,000 tonne winery, with a 30 million litre storage capacity and two automated wine cask filling lines.
In 1988 HJ Heinz sold the Buronga site to Thomas Hardy & Sons, who subsequently renamed it the Stanley Wine Company. Prior to the merger with Berri Renmano Limited in 1992, Hardys added a further semi-automated two litre packaging line and storage facilities were increased.
Today the Stanley Wine Company is proud of being one of the lowest cost producers in the Australian wine industry, and forms an integral part of the BRL Hardy Wine Group. The winery now has an impressive 45,000 tonne crushing capacity and "state of the art" technology, which allows 12 million litres of grape juice to be cold fermented fortnightly during vintage. In addition 8 million litres of juice can be stored in cold room facilities for future use in blending and fermentation.
Not only are these huge volumes made into quality wine but they must be blended and finally packaged.
Once the winemakers are satisfied with the quality of the wine it is packaged along three state of the art packaging lines with a combined yearly filling capacity of over 35 million litres.
The Stanley cask is an Australian icon, being enjoyed by many Australians every year on a multitude of occasions. It is very ably supported by the Buronga Ridge range of casks.
